For instance, we may think that we need to learn something before we believe it.

Or we might think that we can't do something until we're sure of ourselves. We can't always achieve the level of self-confidence that we desire to achieve without some amount of self-evaluation. It's natural for us to want to be right, but the point is that we shouldn't believe anything unless it makes sense to us.
